Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our Title I school has six hundred students in Pre-K through fifth grade. They are curious, enthusiastic, hard-working, and respectful. Our school is 84% free and reduced-price lunch and we have free breakfast for 100% of the student body. Each one deserves a dignified education. Unfortunately, many students do not have their basic necessities met outside of school.
My students do not let their socioeconomic status affect their desire for learning.
The students are eager learners and have a love for school, which for many is the only consistent part of their lives. Every day I learn more about their struggles, their hardships, and their courage. I attempt to foster an environment that helps each student feel comfortable, safe and enjoy learning.
The diverse life experiences of my students bring a unique atmosphere to my classroom and our entire school. There is never a day in which I am not in awe of my students' lives, both good and bad. My students are excited to be at school. Our school offers the most consistent home many of them will have with their most consistent family.
My Project
My students have been given the opportunity to advance their learning in problem solving, collaborating with peers, programing, reading and following structure design. My students would not have the opportunity to dip their toes into robotics without generous donations. My students found that building and programming was exciting and educational at the same time. Our world uses so much technology, this was also an opportunity for students to learn more about technology and how it is used in different dynamics. I want to expand on our opportunities and dare to dream bigger this year by opening up the world of coding their robots to operate autonomously. Having a Microsoft Surface Go will help enable my students to experience the world of coding in a hands-on environment.
Coding will give my students the opportunity to advance their learning in robotics, computer technology, STEM skills and positively collaborating with their peers.
It will open their eyes to careers in engineering, computer technology, and many others. This year I want to afford my team the opportunity to see how well their invention work autonomously. By growing my program, this will keep students engaged and create opportunities where they use trial and error as well as embrace mistakes through their learning.
My students come to practice, not only after school, but every free minute they have, to learn new things and take-on hard robotics challenges in order to grow both personally and academically. The students in my robotics class are 94% Hispanic and 75% female. These two areas of our population are underrepresented in STEM fields, but growing daily. My goal is to create opportunities for my students to test their engineering skills in different ways.
