Microscopy of Marine and Aquatic Environments

My Project

My classroom is set in an outlying Native Alaskan school on Prince of Wales Island in Alaska. Research has shown that my students thrive on place based education and hands-on learning, so I try to incorporate the natural environment as much as possible in our lessons.

Our little school of 70 students is located within walking distance of estuary, river, forest and bog environments.

My students will use these materials for exploring the biology of their local area.

We will study and compare cells and microbes across marine and aquatic environments. Students will compare collected samples of algae with plant cells under the microscope and run chromatography tests to compare pigments. They will test for coliform bacteria from several collected locations, including drinking water. Finally, they will grow microbes from marine and aquatic water samples. Overall, I really believe my students will enjoy this project, and learn a tremendous amount about their local environment.
