Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach 11th-grade biology and environmental science in a public project-based learning (PBL) high school. My scientists tackle real-world problems with their curiosity, innovation, and integration of current science and technology in our classroom and in the community. Our classroom reflects the rich and diverse culture of the San Diego region from all socioeconomic backgrounds. All of our students at our school benefit from a full inclusion IEP education to access a university-level STEAM curriculum.
Our school believes that 100% of students deserve an opportunity to continue in higher education after graduation and excel in their gifts and talents.
My student scientists use STEAM as a way to explore their interests, investigate their ideas, and design new solutions. My students use their varying backgrounds, languages, and experiences to work together to create an inclusive, forward-thinking team that utilizes biochemistry, physiology, molecular biology, ecology, astrobiology, botany, and engineering to design and conduct experiments for the International Space Station. These experiences bring my scientists together in a positive, rigorous learning environment while also preparing them for future STEAM majors and careers.
My Project
Our students are beginning a San Diego ecology project where they will be studying abiotic factors, native, and invasive species in San Diego. They will be creating an interactive trail map of their ecosystem explaining the species adaptations in relation to drought, fires, climate change, and human impact.
With the requested microscopes and soil tests, students will be using professional microscopy in the field to examine cellular structures and soil geology within their communities.
This will enable students to understand and tell their ecosystem stories from a scale of cell level to biome level to help show others how all organisms and abiotic factors are interconnected.
