Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Throughout the year my Biology students are introduced to both the micro and macro world. The microscopic world is an amazing complex one and hidden from most of us. My students will be able to access this world with microscopes, the tool of scientists around the world.

I want my students to have have access to this microscopic world and see the world from a different scale.

Our class is incredibly hands-on and we have labs that will be enhanced with the use of microscopes. Some labs include pill behavior, worms blood rate, and Daphnia heart beat.

Microscopes invite students to share in the sense of wonder that scientists have felt for centuries looking through the microscope. I want to also give students access to a tool that they can use in their future careers. Many types of scientists, seeking to understand the natural and physical world better, use microscope in their work. Forensic scientists examine blood, dust, fibers and other trace materials at a crime scene to help prosecute criminals. Environmental scientists examine soil and water samples, while geneticists observe chromosomes for defects. In engineering, material scientists use microscopes to inspect the components of structures such as buildings, bridges and dams to ensure that they are safe. I hope to inspire my students into a STEM field.
