Microscopes Unlock the Microscopic World in Biology Class

My students need three compound microscopes with 4X, 10X, and 40X objectives.

My Students

I envision each of my students being able to use a microscope to make detailed scientific observations by the end of the school year. Observation is a key skill for further study in the field of science. Microscopes are a necessary tool for achieving this objective.

Our blended learning environment serves over 500 students who take classes online and in a cyber cafe.

The students come from a wide variety of learning styles and backgrounds. Students attend a weekly Biology lab, where they work together and participate in hands-on learning experiences related to the content they learn online throughout the week. This is a favorite time for many students. Not only do they practice scientific process skills, but they also are given the opportunity to work in a group setting to communicate their observations and scientific findings with their peers.

My Project

My students need three compound microscopes with 4X, 10X, and 40X objectives. We have several labs which require the use of microscopes to fine-tune the skill of scientific observation. Some examples include observing various cell types, preparing our own wet mount slides of plant and animal cells, and observing and classifying the stages of mitosis in whitefish and elodea cells. In addition to observation skills, students will become adept at the use of a microscope in scientific study.

Donations to this project will serve a variety of students and needs.

Students in my Biology class will be given the gift of learning an important scientist skill as well as the gift of confidence as they progress in their education, hopefully towards a career in science!
