Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a teacher in a low-income school, my students are faced with many challenges. In spite of these obstacles, our school is one of the top-performing schools in the state and my students are some of the top-performing students in the nation. I engage my students with rigorous, meaningful, and collaborative learning activities where they can apply their knowledge creativity.
My sixth grade class consists of 23 amazing students who come from very low income families and yet they are very motivated to achieve academically.
Our school is also one of the most ethnically and linguistically diverse schools in the Bronx. My students come to school each day excited to learn.
My students are super motivated to do well in school and to eventually go to college to become engineers, doctors, scientists, and related career fields. They excel in STEAM subjects by approaching problem solving creatively and with great enthusiasm.
My Project
My students are eager to learn and investigate the world of natural and environmental science. Recently, my class was engaged in a three month water systems science project as part of a National Geographic program.
As part of that program, my students learned how water ecosystems work in New York City and they learned how to become good environmental stewards.
They engaged in hands-on learning with pressing environmental issues through field trips to local conservation parks where they served as junior scientists.
My students are eager to take their learning of environmental science to a deeper level by exploring the natural microworld with microscopes.
They are very motivated to participate in authentic hands-on science projects such as the UNESCO Global Microscience Experiments Project.
My students will use these microscopes to examine the water quality of the local area and then to write a paper recommending how to improve our local water system. Science is engaging and fun when students use the right tools so these microscopes will provide my middle school students with the necessary technology they need to learn about the local environment and how to improve it.
