My students love to do science labs. Hands-on learning is more engaging for them. They learn more and they retain more. To do labs though, we need basic equipment. We need a microscope, slides and reference materials.
Our school community is a rural public high school in Hawaii.
Many of my students have mild and moderate disabilities. We are in a high poverty area with many of students qualifying for free lunch. Many live with single parents, relatives or foster parents. Despite these challenges, my students are bright, and many aspire to go to college.
My Project
These lab items are durable and can be utilized this year and in the future. One of the most important units in our biology class is that on cells. In studying cells, one of the best ways is to look at actual cells instead of just photographs in a textbook. To do this we need a microscope and a selection of slides. In addition, some reference materials that can be used to help the student learn the proper way to use a microscope are needed.
My students could participate in many interesting labs if we had some simple equipment.
My students are really interested in science. Please help nurture this interest. Please consider helping us obtain these basic items for our lab.
