Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach classes of 7th and 8th graders at a Title 1 school who are interested in learning about digital technology applications that are relevant to their lives. Some are incredibly diligent and hard working; some are searching for what motivates them; and others are on the verge of concluding that school doesn't work for them. In other words, I have a typical class of middle school students, and they come with a tremendous variety of backgrounds, abilities, and experiences.
I have found that my students respond positively to projects they consider relevant to their lives that call upon their creativity, and they respond particularly well to digital movie making.
When they are planning, shooting, and editing videos, they are focused and they take initiate to research to find just the right information to understand issues and communicate messages about them. For this reason, I want to provide them with the basic equipment required to create engaging digital PSAs and stories using video.
My Project
My students are doing original research to better understand and respond to issues affecting themselves and their peers. They get to choose the issues, conduct surveys, and analyze the results. Then they create short PSA videos and share them with the school and through a class channel online.
My students are learning about relevant issues that affect their lives, and they are learning how to use their knowledge and skills to make an impact.
They can create high quality videos using iPads and free video editing apps, but they need decent microphones in order to record voice overs and interviews.
