My High School is an urban high school located in Phoenix, Arizona, that serves highly at-risk students that generally come from intense poverty. Our schools free and reduced rate lunch percentage is so high year in and year out that we qualify for a special provision in the Nation School Food Program that allows us to provide free breakfast and free lunch to every student that attends school with us.
While our High School is predominantly populated with Hispanic and black students, calling us a diverse campus does not quite do us justice.
This past school year we had students enrolled that were born in thirty (30) different countries. Yes, that’s countries, not counties. Our English Language Learning program includes over fifteen (15) native languages. We serve students that are refugees from war-torn countries and last year had a student graduate high school here in the United States after attempting high school in two previous countries. In one of those countries, he was shot on his way to school and ultimately had more fortune than some of his friends who did not survive.
We Love our students and we instill an ALL IN attitude that can persevere through life's challenges.
My Project
Our student population is one of the most diverse in the state. This project of installing a Washer and Dryer along, with other pertinent supplies, will allow our students to do their laundry at school.
Our school gains assistance from the McKinney–Vento Homeless Assistance Act, and allowing our homeless students to do their laundry, will limit the embarrassment of wearing dirty clothes.
Our high school has wanted to fulfill this project for over four years. We have seen the uptick of bullying due to our students wearing dirty or the same clothes. We accept all our students and will do anything to make them feel welcome and loved.
