Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Providing 6th-grade students at our school in Los Angeles with access to "Mexica" before their author visit with Kayden Phoenix will significantly enhance their learning experience. By engaging with the graphic novel prior to the event, students can familiarize themselves with the storyline, characters, and themes, allowing for more insightful discussions and meaningful interactions with the author. This early exposure enables students to formulate thoughtful questions, analyze the text critically, and connect deeply with the author's creative process during the visit.

Moreover, pre-reading "Mexica" serves as a valuable educational tool for developing comprehension skills and cultural awareness.

As students immerse themselves in the world of ancient Mexico depicted in the graphic novel, they encounter historical contexts, diverse perspectives, and complex themes such as mythology, identity, and societal structures. This exposure not only enhances their understanding of the text but also broadens their knowledge of Mesoamerican history and fosters empathy towards different cultures.

The 6th-grade students at our school are particularly special due to their accelerated academic abilities and eagerness to engage with challenging material. Their readiness to delve into complex concepts allows them to grasp the nuances of "Mexica" more readily and to explore its themes in depth. Furthermore, the diverse cultural milieu of Los Angeles enriches the learning experience by offering a wealth of perspectives and opportunities for cultural exploration.

In summary, providing early access to "Mexica" primes the students for a more enriching and impactful author visit, where they can actively participate in discussions, deepen their understanding of the text, and appreciate the cultural richness depicted in the graphic novel. This experience aligns with the students' accelerated learning trajectory and their diverse cultural context, making it a valuable and transformative educational opportunity.
