Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Imagine you woke up one morning and discovered you'd be teaching English to students in a 12th grade special education class. When you got there you realized they had already checked out. They didn't know how to use their imagination or write a creative piece. They're about to graduate from high school and they can't spell "diploma." But I know they're capable of more. I know that with the right tools and support they can write beautifully and they can be affected and inspired by books. If only the school had those books.
Imagine your teacher read the first line of the Metamorphosis to you and asked you to "Imagine you are Gregor Samsa." What would you do?" How would you respond? What would you write? Hopefully you would write your teacher a descriptive story about your journey as a dung beetle and relate it to your own story of achievement and overcoming the obstacles of being a student in special education living in the projects. I hope that's what my students will do.
Imagine you woke up one morning to find you were transformed into a giant bug. Or maybe you just know what it feels like to not quite fit into the mold that everyone else does. Imagine you are an 18 year old inner city kid in a special education classroom and how few options you have in 6 months. I hope to use this book as a way to reach those kids. I know it will be a challenging book for them but it opens up a lot of opportunities for creative writing assignments and self-reflection. All I need is 25 copies of "The Metamorphosis" by Franz Kafka.
I hope that by teaching this book in my classroom it will engage my students and allow them to further develop analytical and critical thinking skills to understand how books can be a reflection of society. I hope they will develop a love for literature and storytelling. I hope it will help them to become better writers and encourage them to use their imaginations a little more often. I hope that you will help make a difference in their lives.
