Metal Beds are Best!

Help me give my students a heavy duty raised bed for our garden.

My Project

Raised beds in the garden are great because they are off the ground, easier to plant in and are aesthetically soothing to the eyes. Having raised beds allows you to have soil that is softer and more nutritious to plant in and has better drainage that doesn't waterlog the plants we grow in the beds. Currently we have both wooden and metal beds in our garden, and the metal beds are both rectangular and oval in shape.

The raised beds that have curved corners and are higher than 1 1/2 feet have been the most successful in our garden.

Having one more of these sturdy raised beds will get us one step closer to getting rid of the rotting beds and grow lots of vegetables for students, teachers and the animals. The book included in this project will help us incorporate earthworms in each of our raised beds. We will experiment with building mini-vermicompost bins to bury. Students will use this raised bed to provide food for themselves, their classmates, families and community.
