Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are all identified as Talented or Gifted Students. They are from diverse backgrounds and all attend a large inner-city school district where all students qualify for free breakfast and lunch. We are challenged on resources and funds in all aspects of our program. We are involved in a variety of enrichment activities and represent the highest achievers our school has to offer. Students in grades 9-12 work on projects, philosophical discussions, volunteer programs, mock trial, and a variety of leadership roles...all for NO COURSE CREDIT! We are here for the joys of learning and building a community.

Our focus is on exposure to programs and experiences that would not normally be available in a regular ed classroom.

My Project

My students begin their junior year studying the biology of the brain and how it affects us, especially on the subconscious level. We use a variety of free resources that are available online, but need books like Malcolm Gladwell's Blink to truly spark our interest and create hands on activities for students to try in class. During senior year my students work on understanding their current needs and behaviors, then set goals for college and beyond through the development of healthy habits via Sean Covey's Seven Habits of Highly Effective Teens.

Using both Gladwell and Covey I am able to give the students practical ways to encourage self awareness and deep introspection to lead them into adulthood armed with a tool box for successfully navigating the challenges that lie ahead.

This is one of the biggest impacts I can make in their lives: giving them the skills they need, which can be used for years to come, to find success in everyday life...the goal of every educator.
