My Students
I teach in a low income, high poverty area. Our school is located in an urban neighborhood in New York City where students live in apartment houses. 85% of our students are eligible for free and reduced-price lunches. The students are served breakfast, lunch and even an early dinner, for those students that stay for the after-school program. Many of our students come to school hungry and rely on the school meals for their daily source of nutrition.
There are 18 students, of different ethnic backgrounds and for many, this is their first school experience.
We have 10 students who do not speak English. The students speak Creole, Arabic, and Spanish. The students are African American, Haitian, Latino, Arabic, and Jamaican. For the majority of the students, this is their first educational experience. Many of them have not heard stories being read aloud. Many students do not have educational toys, such as blocks, and LEGO blocks at home.
The students come to my classroom to a place where they are comfortable: socially and emotionally. A place where they learn.
My Project
For many of the Pre K students in my class, this is their first school experience. I am trying to help them transition into a positive school experience by calming them with their ability for self-expression with their experiences with different types of paint. The children currently enjoy the art experience through paint, but we are running low on our supplies. We will use the white and red finger paint to add to the other colors that we have in stock to learn about mixing colors while getting out hands messy. It is a great sensory experience. The watercolor paints are great for promoting fine motor coordination while using a different medium. The tempera paint stick are another method for self expression while developing a proper grip needed for writing skills. Theses art experiences will build their self-esteem.
The students will develop their creative minds through positive art experiences.
The mini art stampers will be put in the writing center. The children are encouraged to begin writing letters, cards and stories. They begin with pictures and gradually add random letter strands for writing. The writing area, while still an art area needs interesting resources like the crinkle cut scissors. The students will have fun and develop fine motor skills while being creative. These fine motor skills will help the students with more controlled movements that are required for writing, penmanship, buttoning coats and dressing. Preschoolers are naturally curious and love to be artists by exploring different art materials.
