This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students live in the heart of Germantown, MD. Our student population is special, 78% of our students qualify for free and reduced lunch, this means we also serve every student breakfast before school. We serve a population of homeless students. For most of my students, they feel safer at school than they do at home, that is, until last week. Our students are Hispanic, African American, Asian, Caucasian, and European. My classes have about 45% ESOL students, while about 15% of the school population is ESOL students.

My Project

While school has been around forever, students have changes and I am changing teaching in my classroom. Students in my class are able to chose how to learn during the day. They chose if they stand or sit. If they sit they chose desks or couches. However, most of the flexible seating in the room I purchased second hand, and while my students are very respectful and responsible, the life of the second hand furniture is fading.

I need your help to keep the flexible seating in my classroom for my students.

The tall tables and stools will allow students who need to stand to work to be in groups with students seated at the tall tables. The white boards and markers make it so that no matter the seating the student chooses they are able to work with their classmates. The calculators are to allow students to focus on conceptual learning and not math facts (the calculators also mean that I can limit cell phone use in my class if I have calculators for the students to use).

Seven hours sitting in stiff school chairs is difficult. My students are better able to learn and retain materials when they are able to be in alternative seating! Thank you in advance for helping my students! They know that all we have comes from people like you!
