Mesmerized by Mozart: Classical Music Comes to Life!
My students need to gather the funds to attend a live production of the classical music we have been listening to all year!
FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Soto's classroom raised $1,230
This project is fully funded
Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My seniors quickly enter my room at the sound of the bell and make their ways to their seats. Index cards and pens are retrieved from backpacks. Students begin reading, and working on, the do now task as I make my way to raise the volume on the small radio that leans against the window, antenna up.
My students are some of the most surprising young men and women I have come across.
They are thoughtful, open, and inquisitive. They are collaborative, supportive of one another (and their teacher!), and unafraid to challenge ideas. They are slowly learning what it means and looks like to advocate for oneself. Despite all of these exceptional qualities, they are in many ways legions behind their peers in their preparedness - for college, for career, for navigating the city and its resources.
My Project
Whether our students are NYC-born or have only recently been able to call NYC home, there are all equally surprised when they discover there are performance spaces, museums, and public park programs that are available for their enjoyment low to no cost! Many of my students, prior to entering my classroom, never listened to classical music actively - let alone regularly. Students who once wrinkled their nose at me in judgment for playing the music while they worked now ask, with eagerness and aplomb, "Miss aren't you going to play the station for us?"
The idea to take the students to the New York Philharmonic as a mini "senior trip" excursion came when I heard one student whisper to another, "I wonder what this sounds like in real life." It occurred to me that most of my kids have never attended a live classical music concert. This is an opportunity for them to cement a relationship that has just begun.
This trip will have an impact that goes far beyond our classroom doors and will travel with them far beyond the stage they will walk across to accept their diplomas.
So many of our students are afraid to feel unwelcome or out of place in venues they perceive as "for rich people." Just as they begin to develop an interest (in this case, classical music), they graduate. Many of our kids stay in NYC for college. It is my hope that they will grow confident enough to explore on their own next year.
