My Students

Being a first year teacher of fifth graders, my students come from a very diverse rural community. Our school boundaries include a Native American reservation and large Hispanic population. Our community also has a large National Guard influence, which employs many parents and guardians of my students.

Although my students are diverse, they are a close knit team where they help each other learn and grow while respecting each others individual diverseness.

Our theme this year is being a "HERO" with superpowers that are more attainable such as being a friend, being a buddy, not a bully, or even, a good listener.

I look forward to making our classroom a safe healthy learning environment where resilient students can safely make mistakes while learning and growing.

My Project

This year my students are struggling in math and especially those that do not like math. So I thought it would be a good idea to get them excited about math by getting them to do math while having fun.

I would like them to receive a math manipulative kit for Christmas where they can play math games with their families at home over the holidays.

I will use the laminator and laminating pouches to laminate math games and they will use the dry erase markers to mark their playing boards. They will store their games in the zipper pouches. The students will use the playing cards, dice, and crayon boxes for a variety of math games such as multiplication war, guess my number, and other fun math games.

I know this will be a great way to engage my students and maybe even get them to the point of liking math! They also will be spending quality time with family while playing these games.
