Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Teaching is a profession that allows us to provide our students with the tools to be the change-makers they are meant to be. My role as an educator is to ensure they reach their highest potential which means humanizing my Biology classroom. To do this, I strive to incorporate different activities that are often forgotten in STEM spaces such as SEL practices, music, and art. It's been proven that students learn best through the incorporation of art allows students to engage in a deeper sense of learning all while allowing them to grow in their fine motor skills, creativity, collaboration, and language development. My students possess a wealth of knowledge and exhibit their passion for the arts through their participation in extracurricular activities like drama and dance and the exceptional art pieces they produce in their notebooks and class assignments.

By donating to our project, you will have the opportunity to support my students in connecting their art and STEM identities which will help them be more well-rounded individuals.

The use of these resources will allow for more engaging activities to take place in my classroom which will all be centered on bridging the arts with Biology. For instance, this past year I had my students use the Post-it easel pad to create Punnett square stories where they must write a believing background and draw out the characters as well as traits they are seeking to figure out the probability for. The students engaged in a gallery walk to solve their peer's unique problems which reflected their identities. Activities like these will hopefully engrain the idea of the interconnection of science with the arts so they can grow in their STEM identity.
