Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
These mentor texts are great books to support students on their journey to becoming amazing readers and authors.
The school where I work is a Title 1 school where a majority of the students receive free or reduced lunch. Many students speak Spanish, Polish, or another language other than English at home. It is a great a diverse place to work! They would benefit from having these examples of literature. We have already had so many rich conversations that stem from our read alouds this year. My hope is to add more books to our library so we can continue that trend.
My class consists of 20 amazing students.
Of those 20, 11 are English learners. They all have a think win-win attitude and do their personal best to contribute to our classroom community.
My Project
These books are listed in a great professional book called The Ramped Up Read Aloud. This professional book gives many ways to use the titles I have asked for. We will use these books to help us become better writers of different genres, including narratives and opinion.
These books will also help students embrace differences and include others.
I Walk with Vanessa by Kerascoët explores the feelings of helplessness and anger that arise in the wake of seeing a classmate treated badly, and shows how a single act of kindness can lead to an entire community joining in to help. With themes of acceptance, kindness, and strength in numbers, this timeless and profound feel-good story will resonate with readers young and old.
