Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am an elementary school teacher in Chicago. I teach in a neighborhood school where ninety-eight percent of the students get reduced price or free lunch. I work in a underprivileged Hispanic neighborhood. Some students do not have the necessary school supplies to have a successful school year.
My students come from a low socioeconomic background with limited resources available.
We are a neighborhood school with 100% free lunch program.
My students come into the classroom with smiles, and they motivate each other. I have a very diverse group. I have students who are below grade level and others that need additional support to reach grade level. I also have students who have special needs. I need to accommodate each of their needs in order for them to be successful.
I could describe my school as a caring, loving community where teachers devote their efforts for the well-being of the students. We have students come from all over the city of Chicago. The students come from diverse backgrounds and low income families.
My Project
I am requesting books to help with my instruction during Reader's and Writer's Workshop times. Specifically, they will help with writing opinion pieces, and getting to know characters in reading. While I am not using them, they will become part of our classroom library, for all students to enjoy them! The books will help improve my students abilities to understand the reading strategies and skills better.Using mentor texts will allow me to do think aloud and model how to apply the skills within the text.
Students will be able to understand that the skills and apply them to any text.
Also, students always enjoy being able to use the mentor texts as their own books to read during reading workshop.
