Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
A typical day in my classroom involves students learning through a reader's and writer's workshop model. I want my students to have a love for books as well as the skills they need to be successful readers and writers. I lack the mentor texts needed to make learning more enjoyable for my students.
My students are comprised of a varied mix of socioeconomic levels as well as academic levels.
Approximately eighty-eight percent of our students qualify for free or reduced lunches. We also have many English Language Learners. Many of my students lack the exposure to quality literature needed for academic and social growth. The students LOVE to listen to, read, and analyze great stories. They have a strong passion for learning but do not always have the resources to help them.
My Project
My students need quality mentor texts to grow as writers. The students need to read and study mentor texts, be in constant dialogue with these texts, and incorporate what they learn from the diaglogue into their own writing.
The mentor texts incuding Pecan Pie Baby, A Bike Like Sergios, and Animals that Nobody Loves will help students notice the craft moves with the intent of trying those moves in their writing.
The mentor texts I am requesting will help students teach themselves about writing and give opportunities to practice reading like writers. With the use of the post-its, pens, and markers students can read mentor texts and mark parts of the text that they love and try those author's craft moves in their writing. Students can ask themselves "What did this writer do that I could try? If the kids depend on the teachers for craft, they become too dependent on the teacher. Using mentor texts fosters student independence and agency.
