Mentor Texts for Expert Readers and Writers

My students need 25+ strong mentor texts that connect to Common Core State Standards. Students will use these texts to strengthen the work we do in reading and writing.

My Students

When did you first consider yourself a "reader" or a "writer"? Many students have a hard time seeing it for themselves. Using mentor texts provides students with a published piece to showcase specific skills to motivate student readers and writers to strengthen and improve their own skills.

My second graders are literacy lovers.

They crave a good story and love being read to. Read aloud time is definitely our favorite time of the day! The students look forward to that independent reading and writing time when they have a chance to either get lost in a book or create an amazing tale themselves. They are enthusiastic and look at our literacy block as a "fun time".

My Project

I am requesting a variety of strong mentor texts that connect to Common Core State Standards. Mentor texts are examples of good writing for students. They help students visualize what that writing could be like in their own stories. Mentor texts used for reading allows teachers to introduce a concept effectively and the students to practice important reading skills and strategies in a successful way. Mentor texts can be used to teach any subject from math concepts to social development. Mentor texts make up a large part of my teaching and having the right books makes a all difference.

Teaching with mentor texts plays a huge role in my teaching.

The time spent listening to and responding to texts is invaluable. The learning that comes from a mentor text is crucial and cannot be done without the proper materials. The books I am requesting can make a world of difference to my students' learning this year and to their interest in becoming life long learners. These are materials that will have a strong learning impact not only on this year's class, but the classes of students to come.
