Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We all have favorite books, favorite authors, and favorite quotes that we reference in our lives. As writers, we use the traits we admire in what we read to make our own writing more interesting.

Our school is a K-6 charter school in an urban area.

Our students are diverse and they all strive to be "civic-minded leaders, accomplished writers, and resilient lifelong learners." Becoming accomplished writers means that students must be exposed to a variety of quality literature. My first graders need books like Laura Numeroff's famous "If You Give a Mouse A Cookie" to learn how she uses repetition and humor to craft an enjoyable fictional tale. They must also read books like "Under One Rock: Bugs, Slugs, and Other Ughs" by Anthony D. Fredericks to study how some authors write about content-specific texts such as science.

My Project

By studying the way our favorite author's write, my students will learn how to read like a writer. Using these types of books as mentor texts for first graders changes the way students feel about themselves as writers as well as the quality of the texts they are beginning to craft as young writers. My students will build their vocabulary, learn different patterning techniques and organizational skills, use advanced techniques for creating their voice in their writing, and become stronger writers overall.

Writing helps students read, solve problems, and understand concepts in every part of the curriculum.

Writing in its many forms is the signature means of communication in the 21st century. Our students are preparing for a future where every person is not only an accomplished writer, but also an active participant in a digital, interconnected world.
