Mentor Texts... A Great Way to Teach Reading and Writing

My Students

We are in a small city in Western Wisconsin. My second grade classroom used to contain desks and hard chairs. Recently, I switched to tables and some flexible seating options. Now that my students are able to learn comfortably, I am ready to get them reading and writing in ways I've always dreamed about. I've been studying some books and discussing with other teachers about ways to use Mentor Texts to help my students become better readers and writers. I have a few good books, but with our limited budgets we are still in need of more options...

Imagine a room filled with the productive hum of students engaged in an literature lesson, a writing project about which they feel a great passion.

Envision a group of children with notebooks in their hands busily writing using learning styles they have experienced and discussed from their Mentor Texts; Words that flow, feelings of real characters expressed, a voice of their own coming out on the page. With your help my students could become the next great authors of their generation, someone you can say YOU helped to both guide and mold.

My Project

Jennifer Serravallo has written several books on both reading and writing. She gives many examples of great books to use to while teaching English Language Arts. I have chosen both her second and third grade sets of "Go-To Books."

Books that have great themes and make the reader see how word choices can make a real impact are the kind I want to share with my students.

Up in the Garden and Down in the Dirt brings the reader into a world where animals that populate a garden get along with each other throughout the year. A Bad Case of Stripes shows the reader it is okay to like the choices we make. We don't need to worry about what others think. Wump World and The Giving Tree allows us to experience the importance of taking care of our earth. These are just a few of the wonderful books my students will be using when you fund our project.
