My students come from a variety of backgrounds and many face struggles and challenges on a daily basis. Included in their daily challenges are often times financial struggles. All of my students receive a free breakfast and lunch every school day. My goal is to make the classroom a fun and welcoming environment where they can learn and grow regardless of what goes on outside of school. Even with what these kids face on a daily basis, they come to school with a positive outlook and a love for learning!
With the income restrictions placed on some of the families that I serve, many of my students do not have access to supplies to help them thrive.
My kids love to play, read, move, and everything else that your average elementary student does in a day. I cannot control what goes on outside of my classroom, but I take pride in what goes on inside of it. I want to make sure that my students strive and that they have what they need to be successful and continue their love of learning.
My Project
My students love listening to read aloud stories and it is great when the stories can directly relate to what we are learning. I have selected these books because they have great examples of story elements that we practice with regularly.
Reading aloud to students, even older students, is great for modeling fluency, expanding vocabulary, and building a love of reading.
We practice skills regularly using short stories and passages, but these hard back books will demonstrate the same skills and create more connections to the text. Many of these books involve engaging topics, topics that students can relate to, and topics that they have never been exposed to before. There are some science texts which will be used to help build content area vocabulary and will not just be helpful in reading class.
