Our school is a kindergarten through seventh grade, dual-language, immersion charter school in the DeKalb County School District of Metro Atlanta, Georgia. We are a multi-racial, multi-cultural and multi-lingual community. Our kindergarten students learn math and science while fully immersed in Spanish, Mandarin or French. They learn language arts and social studies in English.
Our students are special because not only are they immersed into a new language, but they are challenged to excel and be top performers in English language arts and math as well.
We utilize a variety of teaching methods to make sure these students are getting everything they need at school. The parents are also integral parts of the learning process and support the work at home that their children are doing in the classroom. The student brings home books and other class materials to show and share with their parents. It's a team effort!
My Project
Aside from teaching my kindergartners how to read words, I teach them how to be readers. While it's necessary to be able to read words, it holds little value if the student doesn't understand the meaning of the words within a sentence, and the meaning of the sentence within a story. Specific books are used to teach specific reading skills. When I read each book requested in this project, I have a particular teaching point in mind. Listening to these books read again on an iPod, helps to reinforce those teaching points.
This project would provide our classroom with four important and fun literacy centers with specially chosen texts.
Each center would be equipped with one iPod loaded with audiobooks, as well as the corresponding texts. The books included are copies of the mentor texts that I use to teach specific lessons. When students can review the texts over and over, it helps to reinforce the lessons that I've taught.
