My students need mentor text to improve their writing. By observing various authors, finding and discussing patterns and skills, and finally making connections with these examples they will be able to mimic it in their writing.
Many of my students come from low income homes and yet they never let that stop them from doing their best and striving for success. They are very hard workers and never give up. I am ready to start my 2nd year of teaching 3rd grade ELAR. I'm looking forward to implementing the new strategies I have learned at Region 7esc this summer with my students. I know this will be an excellent school year because of the wonderful students at my school.
I love my students because they are so hungry for knowledge.
They love reading about the new and fun adventures they find in the pages of books. They are also eager to dive into non-fiction and learn about world they live in. The town we are from is very small, but the children know there is a big exciting world out there and reading is going to be the key to their future successes.
My Project
I have recently completed training on using mentor text to teach writing skills. My project would provide me with two instructional text to use as a reference when planning lessons. The other books requested will be used by me to provide explicated examples of desired skills that the students will then model in their own writing. Students may then find specific sentences or paragraphs that model skills that they are studying so they may apply these mentor text examples to their own writing.
Writing is a skill that all students can learn when given the proper instruction and models.
They need may examples of good writing structure like the ones found in the mentor text to help them apply the author's craft and skills they will be learning. The materials will make a difference in the way I am teaching writing by making it more engaging, hands on by mimicking a writer and providing a way for students to discuss how a published write does what they do.
