This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

As a school psychologist, I play a multi-faceted role that is crucial to the emotional, mental, behavioral, and academic functioning of students. Having a role that spans many different areas allows me to reach a wide population of students who demonstrate different cultural, linguistic, socioeconomic, and neurological learning differences. This is such an important contribution to school environments, however, requires many resources and continued education to keep up with current evidence-based practices and the evolving needs of our students.

Teens in our current society face a multitude of different stressors, traumas, and expectations that were not present when many of us educators were adolescents.

This has led to an increase in mental health concerns like anxiety, depression, and acts of self-harm, especially within our special education population. Therefore, it is important to use continued learning, evidence-based interventions, and a bio-psycho-social approach to address the current needs of our students. With the materials I am requesting, I can utilize current, evidence-based interventions such as coping skills for anxiety to help support the mental health of high school students. Further, it will provide tools to empower students with disabilities such as ADHD, Autism, or learning disabilities to advocate for themselves and learn about their personal learning styles as well as books.

Oftentimes, students at this age are expected to be independent and don't prioritize basic needs such as food, so having access to snacks is not only important but is a reinforcement for students who require more behavioral support. Older students also struggle with advocating for sensory needs like flexible seating so having access to an adjustable footstand while testing can make a difference in their overall performance on assessments. My goal is to use these resources to best support the evolving needs of our students to lead them to success.
