Mental Health Regulation Room: A Safe Space on Campus

My Project

Over the past two years, many students have struggled with a wide range of mental health challenges and lack of access to mental health care. Due to the uncertainty and isolation associated with COVID-19, students have experienced significant emotional difficulties including stress and anxiety.

Our goal is to provide access to resources that will allow students to practice and learn emotion regulation skills in a safe space on campus through furnishing and supplying a designated mental health wellness room in the Counseling Center.

By providing a safe space on campus to learn and grow emotionally, students will be better equipped to succeed academically and in all areas of life. Because each student is unique, we would like to supply the mental health room with a variety of coping skill tools that target all sensory categories: sight, sound, touch, smell, taste, and movement. Students can utilize these tools to decrease stress and anxiety while on campus.

The skills that students learn in the mental health room can be translated to their overall well-being by improving communication skills, self-regulation, and self-advocating.

Goals:

Translating coping skills across other settings and areas of life by improving self-regulation, communication, crisis prevention, de-escalation, and self-advocating skills.

Targeted Outcomes:

Decreasing behavioral referrals, increase attendance, decrease in-class disruptive behaviors, and an overall increase student's mental health and wellbeing.
