My Project
As a math teacher with a background in special education, I know all too well that my work in an inclusion classroom extends far beyond just teaching students Algebra and Geometry. The students I work with are wonderfully bright and deserving of a quality STEM education at Dearborn. However, most of my students are high-needs, coming from low-income communities, are first or second-generation immigrants predominately from Cape Verde, and/or identify as English Learners.
I need the support of incredible donors like you to make sure that I can give my students the resources they need to take care of their mental health while learning math!
I believe that ALL my students are capable of engaging in grade-level, standards-aligned, and rigorous math tasks. It’s one thing for me to tell that to my students, but I also want to show the belief I have in them with concrete actions. We’ve been in school only for a couple of weeks now and I’ve gotten so much feedback from my students about the things they’d like to have in math class. They have primarily asked me to hang up more student work and art, hence the request for art-like materials like dry-erase pockets, double-sided tape, etc. Other requests are items like fidgets, whiteboard markers to write/doodle with, and chair cushions to ease their body and mind during instruction. Moreover, high schoolers are extremely busy and have a voracious appetite, so snacks and individual packs of tech/glasses wipes will help them easily get through the day. With this thoughtful care that I want to put into creating a safe and welcoming classroom environment, I hope to inspire my students to see the importance of learning math while taking care of their mental health.
