This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My classroom this year is for 9th-11th graders with extensive support needs. We work on academics throughout the day with emotions and social skills being worked into nearly every lesson.

According the healthy minds policy institute (HMPI), "between 39 and 52% of people with IDD — one to two million people nationwide — have a co-occurring psychiatric condition," (HMPI, 2024).

There are a lot of misunderstandings when it comes to people with extensive support needs. People tend to think they are always happy and never have negative emotions. This is simply not true. In my 12+ years working in this field, I have found that stigmatizing attitudes toward people with IDD from the public and health care professionals has created a critical barrier to accessing appropriate mental health care. People with Down's Syndrome, Autism, Cerebral Palsy, and other differences can benefit from therapy despite the many misconceptions about whether people with IDD can benefit from therapy.

I have a high interest in working with students on their emotional regulation and social skills as both of these are key to helping them cope in a world that holds them back. I am even going back to school to receive another master's to be a counselor where I hope to include people with extensive support needs to help this often overlooked group. The items on this list will be used to support and help my 9th-11th grade students in developing their skills sets to create healthy relationships, healthy boundaries, learn to advocate for themselves, and accept themselves for who they are.
