Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach 10th grade biology at International Studies Learning Center in South Gate. It is an public school in LAUSD district 6. Most of our students are coming from low income families and immigrant parents. We teach our students to be a global citizen despite their hardships. We do not have our own campus. We are using SouthEast High School spaces. Our school has very limited funding for instructional materials. Biology instructional materials are expensive.
In my classroom, I tried to bring a lot of homemade, inexpensive materials to engage students and increase students' understanding. Even so, there is limitation. Most of my students struggled with conceptual and mathematical aspect of genetics and science.
Mendel's Alive is an inquiry base project that is on-going through out the school year. Students will plant Wisconsin fast plants and record the plants' traits. Students will design different cross to identify the parents' genotype. Students would identify the inheritance patterns and probability of inheritance. Through this project, the students will understand science is process of explaining the observed phenomenon. Students will also deepen understanding of statistic and the role math plays in science. Students will also experience Mendelian genetic on their own. Each student is a scientist in this project throughout the school year.
In order to carry out this project, I need plant display stands that allow me to keep the plants alive inside the classroom in a control environment. In addition, we can use it to study others units such as photosynthesis, ecology, global warming, and eukaryotes development.
You can help our students engaged and inspired in science. The future cures for diseases are in our students.
