My students are living in an industrial area. There are recycling center, lumber yard, steel mill, scrap metals centers, shipping and packaging center. There are hardly any green spaces available in the city. They have very limited interaction with plants, especially vegetables. Once a year, I take my class to plant native trees in the local mountain which is 1 hour away. My students enjoy it very much. In my Biology class, due to standards and mandates from the state, plants are not taught in my class. My school does not have any space for a garden. I want to incorporate plants in my classroom. Plus, I notice that my students always bring chips and sodas as their lunch. Students are overweight and unable to pass the Fitness Gram.
