I teach art part-time at PS 198. I love the kids that I teach, even though I only reach about 1/4 of them because of my schedule. One thing that I noticed is that a painting easel is missing from all of the classrooms at my school.
A childhood memory: I remember being lucky enough in first grade to be picked to go to the back of the class to use the classroom easel and create my own painting on a big piece of newsprint. I remember making a big mail box and a big picture of a yellow chick. I still remember sticking my paintbrush into the four prepoured cups of luscious tempera paint that were waiting for me and creating my newsprint masterpiece which I proudly brought home.
Back to the present: I am now an exhibiting painter, an art teacher and have an MFA in painting from an ivy league school. I think the easel in the back of the room, when I was five years old, planted the seeds for who I am now.
I'd love to see an easel in the back of each classroom at PS 198, or at least one class to get things going. I'd like to give the budding artists at PS 198 the same opportunity I had as a child to explore their creativity. This can also be an excellent motivator for improving classroom behavior, an inviting easel waiting to be used by those earning the privilege.
