My Students
My third grade artists love to use their imaginations to create beautiful works of art. They especially enjoy working with clay to create memorable masterpieces.
Our school is one of the oldest schools in our district on the island of Oahu in Hawaii.
Up until the mid-'90s, children of the Oahu Sugar Company workers comprised the majority of the school population. The closing of the sugar plantation has brought many changes to our school community. Many of our families live in multi-family or multi-generational homes. Fifty-five percent of our students receive free or reduced-price lunches. Thirty percent of our families speak a language other than English at home.
Our students are respectful, energetic, inquisitive learners who come to school eager to learn. Their love for learning is evident in the way they enjoy learning and trying new things.
My Project
Our class is busy creating clay sculptures. For many of the students, this is their first time ever working with clay. They have immersed themselves in learning how to work with this new medium and have learned how to use different techniques to create their masterpieces. Students worked so hard to roll, mold, and sculpt the clay and are eager to see their sculptures after they are fired in the kiln.
You can help my students bring their memorable masterpieces to life by providing ceramic glazes to paint their sculptures.
Students will be amazed at how their sculptures are transformed with the glassy texture of the ceramic glazes.
