Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Ninety-six percent of our students qualify for free/reduced lunch and of those, 88% qualify for free lunch. Most of my students come from literacy poor homes as well.
My students do not have easy access to quality literature.
Most of my students come from homes with no books. They also avoid using the library because of the fear of losing books and having to pay to replace them or pay overdue fines. In my classroom, it is my goal to have enough books for all of my students.
My Project
My students of color want to read true stories about people of color. This year we want to read about Malala Yousafzai and her incredible persistence and belief in education despite obstacles. My students love to read true stories of other people who have overcome hurdles to become successful.
It is important that we pair non-fiction texts with literature to analyze what a text says.
I want to make it easier for them to find the books they love. End of year assessments measure whether or not 8th grade students can synthesize information from multiple sources. Reading from multiple points of view will help them master this standard.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
