Memoirs for Memories

Help me give my students these memoirs to go with our personal narrative unit. Students will study personal narrative and memoirs of famous people, and then will write their own personal narrative.

My Project

I’m looking for a selection of memoirs or personal narratives for my students to read in small groups. These books will serve as examples to help us understand the structure of narrative writing. In this unit, students will explore how narrative writing works, especially in the context of true stories, and learn key elements such as exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution. They will analyze different excerpts from memoirs to deepen their understanding of personal narratives. Afterward, they will write their own personal narratives, incorporating sensory details and following a clear story structure.

These books will allow students to choose their own reading material, providing them with the opportunity to select books that interest them as mentor texts.

Once they’ve annotated and taken notes, they’ll meet weekly in their groups to discuss their books. They’ll share their favorite and least favorite parts, ask each other questions, and reflect on the story. Through this unit, we’ll practice skills that enhance story comprehension, but students will also have the freedom to direct their own conversations based on what resonates with them. It will be modeled like a real-life book group. My students absolutely love novel studies because they get to choose what they read, voice their opinions, and discuss books in an authentic way, all while practicing important reading skills.
