My Students

We are a Title 1 school and many of our students receive free and reduced lunch. Some of my students come from homes without books and have come to high school with reading and writing levels far below basic. Others come from homes with more resources & come to the library seeking new books to read. As the school librarian, I try to offer a variety of titles in a wide range of reading levels to tantalize these readers and help them find something they will enjoy. Many of our students really want to improve their skills and are eager to graduate high school.

Reading for pleasure is the best way to improve their literacy skills but often students with low reading levels view reading as a chore.

In addition to a lack of reading materials at home, many students face additional challenges.

We have a number of students who are English Language Learners. We work hard to help them become proficient in their literacy skills. Reading for pleasure is one of the best ways to accomplish that goal. With that in mind, I try to stock items that will entice them to pick up a book and read.

My Project

Independent reading is the cornerstone of building lifelong readers for entertainment, education, career advancement, personal growth, and an active participation in democracy. Help me give that gift to my students by providing books that appeal to them. Since these books are provided through the library, students will check them out to read at home, in class, or anywhere.

After the last few difficult years, students are looking for more connection than ever and many are seeking that connection through books as well as personal experiences.

The books included in this list have a little something for everyone ranging from true crime, historical events, social justice issues, and some are just plain fun to read.
