I would love it if by the end of the school year, my students felt confident in sharing their own journeys and were able to express these stories through both verbal and written formats. I want the students to feel comfortable and heard and to find connections through their stories.
My school is one of the most diverse high schools in America with a student body that speaks over 70 languages.
The students in my classes are bright, sometimes shy, quirky, and multi-faceted. In short, the range in their interests and personalities is as broad as the range in their cultures. This lends itself to rich discussions in and out of the classroom.
My Project
We are approaching a unit on memoirs, where students will explore both the form (how a memoir is structured) and the content (the material the author focuses on from his/her life). Through reading "The Glass Castle," students will better understand the memoir-writing process and use it to write their own memoirs, reflecting on life experiences and following the format laid out in class lessons and examples. The theme of 9th grade English class is "My Identity" and students will certainly explore this theme by reading the text and identifying how it relates to their own struggles with identity and change.
My students need 70 copies of The Glass Castle: A Memoir to understand the components of the memoir genre.
We don't always have enough books for students to each have a copy to read at home.
We currently have 0 copies of The Glass Castle and do not have funds to purchase them. If this project is funded, the students will have access to one of the most important texts in the canon. The Glass Castle is a story of struggle and hope, and through reading the story, students will recognize that though our identities are unique, we are united by our quests for truth and change.
