Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The books featured in this project are destined for approximately 600 kids in 3rd through 8th grade. They are students at a K-8 center in South Florida. I run the school library. About 84% of my library patrons come from households with below average income. The kids tend to be first-generation Americans whose parents have recently arrived in the U.S. from the Caribbean, or from Central or South America. The children don't have access to a lot of juvenile literature at home.
No books in our K-8 library circulate more than the 'Diary of a Wimpy Kid' series: in October, the latest book in the Wimpy Kid saga, 'The Meltdown', hits the stores - our kids will be clamoring for it!
My Project
We're hoping to acquire 15 copies of 'The Meltdown' for the library. Based on past debuts of new Wimpy Kid books, all 15 copies will be checked out inside a couple of hours; after the first week, dozens of kids will have placed 'The Meltdown' on hold. This series is a phenomenon. It is a splendid way to get our kids reading. Additionally, we'd love to acquire 6 graphic novels for our students. Three, by Raina Telgemeier, are tried and trusted: they are so popular that the old copies will be giving up the ghost pretty soon and we need to get brand new versions of the same titles; the other three are titles that should also appeal to our many Raina Telgemeier fans. It's fun, well-illustrated books like these that draw students into our library. Please help us keep packing the kids in!
