Melodies for Minds: Empowering Students With Special Needs Through Music!

Help me give my students who have special needs, access to functional learning through the joy of science and music. I am in need of 7 more Djembe drums to have enough for all students in my program.

My Project

I bring effervescence to curriculum through science and music. I have worked in special education at a Title 1 school for over 14 years. I regularly bring community outreach organizations, music, and science to my students to facilitate deeper peer connections through unique experiences, meaningful comprehension, and functional learning which strengthens their sense of community. My students laugh while they learn and approach learning with alacrity.

I have personally purchased 16 Djembe drums for my students with special needs, but am in need of 7 more to ensure each student has a drum to work with.

Music is valuable in the academic and social progress of my students. My non-verbal students verbalize when we incorporate music in our lessons, all students engage one another with call-and-response musical activities which enhances peer relationships. We incorporate vocabulary, memory and recollection, and following multi-step directives. Each student creates rhythms, and learns about peers by asking questions and incorporating responses into song. Students dance and create movements to songs from various cultures around the globe.

I also incorporate monthly kinesthetic science activities in my lessons. Students engage in complex subjects such as chemistry and physics, in a vibrant way that makes scientific concepts accessible for students with special needs. Students work in groups to problem solve, use contextual cues to infer information, describe, compare, and elaborate on observations. When students are physically creating, the connections they make and depth of learning are strengthened. The requested Glo Germ and black light will be used to demonstrate how viruses transfer. My students will have fun while learning biology concepts with this activity and ideally, remember to practice appropriate hygiene to stay healthy.
