Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

All of the students that will benefit from this project participate in a therapeutic, self-contained, special education program. Our students receive services due to social, emotional, and behavioral issues, and all are identified as high risk due to their ongoing history of disengagement from school based on truancy, academic barriers, and behavioral needs. The resources included in this project will assist us in providing students with healthy foods and snacks which will allow the staff to build connections with students by helping to meet basic needs.

The majority of our students have not had many feelings of success and achievement in school and through the RISE Academy at HPHS, many at-risk students have been able to graduate and find post-secondary success.

Our students face many issues outside of school including poverty and an inability to have many of their basic needs met. By providing snacks, some of which students earn through a restorative-based rewards program, these students no longer have to worry about hunger taking away from their ability to focus on their studies, and discover academic success.

My Project

Please help us provide snack items for our students to eliminate the hunger that our students face daily which takes away from their ability to engage in their learning and concentrate on academic success.

The students in the program struggle to have their basic needs met outside of school and as a result, when we are able to provide them with snack options, we have seen a significant increase in school/class attendance, engagement, and overall academic achievement.

In addition, the ability to eat when they are hungry has increased our ability to build positive relationships as they see that we care about them as a whole person. Our students have been identified as high risk in terms of graduation rates, access to and success within post-secondary education and/or training programs, and high rates of incarceration.
