Meeting Sensory Needs

My Students

Our school is a Therapeutic Day School for special needs students in kindergarten through 8th grade. We provide an alternative educational setting for students with behavioral and emotional disorders who are unable to function in a traditional academic environment.

Most of my students have experienced trauma in their lives and have difficulty coming to school and displaying appropriate social behavior with staff and peers.

Our classes serve students with a wide range of disabilities including intellectual disabilities, behavior disorders, emotional disturbance, autism spectrum disorder and specific learning disabilities. Many are reading well below their grade level.

My Project

With Autism Spectrum Disorder and ADHD on the rise, more and more of our students are needing to fulfill these needs in a manner that is appropriate to the classroom environment. Students with a variety of sensory processing difficulties have heightened sensory needs that distract their focus from learning. These students have sensory needs that need to be met before they can begin to work. All of the items in this project will help take care of their sensory needs in a wide variety of ways so their brains can be freed up to learn.

When we can provide students appropriate tools that satisfy the need to rock or wiggle or fidget with their feet, it frees their minds to attend to learning tasks.

Some need the calming effects of the gentle pressure of a weighted lap blanket to help settle their minds onto learning tasks.
