In order to make the transition from home to school an easier one, we offer choice activities to begin the day called Morning Mindfulness. My classroom offers one of about a dozen different activities offered to students during this time. When students get to choose a preferred activity to begin the day, they are more likely to be able to regulate their emotions and behaviors throughout the school day. Our students struggle to regulate their behaviors and emotions in a traditional school environment particularly when it comes to working with peers. In our alternative educational setting we use non-traditional methods to assist students with learning cooperation skills that enhance peer relations and team building. Lego model kits provide excellent opportunities for learning to follow detailed instructions in order to produce a particular product while simultaneously providing an intellectually stimulating and fun group learning experience.
