Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am blessed with 19 first grade students in my classroom who are eager to learn and explore the world around them. However, my students come from many different backgrounds, which sometimes makes it difficult for students to be exposed to grade-level content at home. Students come from homes that are unable to provide basic supplies, not to mention school supplies. They are made up from a diverse set of backgrounds and include English language learners, special education students, and those receiving free or reduced lunches. Some of my students may even experience being homeless during the school year. Homelessness as an experience that individual people have, rather than a label. It is my goal as their teacher to provide them with basic necessities.
68% of our students are on free or reduced-price meals.
My students are very grateful for your support!
My Project
Many of the students at our school do not always have access to clean clothes. This can be a barrier for their education. It's difficult to focus on reading or math when basic needs aren't being met. At our school, it is part of our mission to encircle our children and their families in order to provide anything we can to remove any learning barriers they may face. Giving students these college t-shirts provides them with clean clothes to wear, eliminates barriers for their education and also helps them feel more comfortable among their peers.
We believe in college readiness for all!
Every student deserves the opportunity to be educated in a way that prepares them for college if they choose to attend.
Giving my students college shirts benefits them in many different ways. For example, the shirts help meet their basic needs while also introducing them to different colleges around the country through the shirts they are given. Each classroom at our school is a designated college, which exposes students to different colleges and encourages the idea of being college-bound. My classroom is the Washington State University Cougars. Go Cougs!
Every Monday, our school participates in 'College Wear Monday' where teachers and students are encouraged to wear their college apparel. We also have school-wide morning announcements where each classroom chants their specific college's fight song/chant. Our college-going culture shows our students that we believe in them and that we know they have bright futures ahead of them. We see college as a possibility for every one of our students regardless of their family's income or background, and we want them to see college as a part of their future, too.
