Meeting Learning Needs by Removing Social Struggles
My students need basic life essentials to help them navigate the difficulties that face adolescent students without worrying about the social stigma associated with not having basic hygiene supplies.
My students are ninth graders in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. They are just beginning the exciting journey that is high school. While they are beginning this journey, it is my hope that with your help I can provide them with the best education possible. They are eager and ready to learn. Though some days they struggle more than others.
As part of the largest high school in the Philadelphia School District, our students are in need of new supplies at a very rapid rate.
With differing backgrounds and consistency in science education coming from middle school, my students need to be given a consistent and well-stocked classroom to really prepare them for their high school education.
My Project
The purpose of this project is to provide students with the basic life essentials that are often overlooked. The first year of high school is so difficult, because it is period of intense growth physically, mentally, socially, and educationally. There is an inherent struggle that comes with being a teenager, and we work to minimize these factors that could detract from students really being able to focus on their education.
With the supplies from this project, I would be able to ensure that my students have the tools they need to feel good in their own skin.
While we would all like to believe that these small social ticks should not matter, the truth is that if our students feel good about themselves they have more confidence in everything else that they do. Take for example our school uniform, students must wear a white oxford shirt and khaki bottoms. For a young lady with a changing body things like a properly fitted camisole or access to feminine products can make a world of difference in how they go about their day in school.
It is our hope that we will be able to minimize the number of students who are affected by a lack of these products, both male and female. No student should have to come to school feeling self conscious.
The supplies donated through this project will made directly available to students in small cupboard in my classroom or in the 9th Grade Academy office. The students will be able to come during their homeroom period and fix themselves up using the combs, hair ties, bobby pins, hairspray, lip balm, antiperspirant, and other personal items.
