This year, as I've gotten to know my students, I've also taken some time to get to know their parents on a more personal level as well. I feel that it is important to develop good relationships with parents to promote parent involvement and set our students up for the most success. My school is in a low-income area and all students receive free breakfast and lunch daily.
As I've gotten to know some of the parents, I've learned that a lot of them are really struggling.
Some of the parents work multiple jobs to make ends meet. Others are caring for their own children, plus other family members/children and are unable to work because of their caregiving commitments.
I've also learned that some of my students and their families struggle to purchase some of their basic necessities, like toileting supplies. Some of them have even had to make choices between food and other necessitities and diapers.
I would love to be able to provide my students with the kind of pull ups that they use to have at the school and also to send home if the parents are running low. This would help alleviate some financial stress from the parents and provide my students with toileting supplies to keep at school.
Its so important to me to make sure that my students have access to their basic needs, because I know that these needs must be met in order to be able to come to school and learn and grow. If we can provide them with some diapers/pull ups at school, then maybe that would give their parents a little extra cash to use on other important necessities.
