Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I am in love with the possibility that meeting my student's basic needs, listening about their dreams (social emotional growth), and helping them write out a plan for their academic goals will truly create self motivated, well disciplined and high achieving students. Thus far, this year my students created their SMART (Specific, Measurable, Actionable, Realistic, Timebound) Goal, and a plan for how to achieve this goal (though implementation of successful habits). Likewise, they are engaged with collecting their data to scientifically prove what helps students succeed.
My students are a very diverse group full of curiosity and eager to demonstrate how meeting their basic need for food makes all the difference!
They all want to be successful, but often they are distracted by hunger. Students will put their heads down, and avoid enriching after school opportunities because they will have to go too long without food.
My Students and I have personally witnessed the high level of participation, and increase in student involvement on days I tell them they will receive a snack for progress made on their goal. Similarly, on days I provide snacks during my student enrichment after school program participation skyrockets.
Therefore, the goal is to increase student success through enriching and accelerated learning opportunities that can occur when basic needs are met. My students are actively working toward their goal but hunger derails them. Supporting this project means I can reward student progress with a snack. This act of kindness in turns lets students know there is a community of people caring and supporting them.
