My Students
Do you remember the game of Twister? The spinner yelling,"right hand red" and "left foot green" to which you ended up under a pile on the living room floor... Flash forward to 2011. Trying to teach a lesson to 21 first graders on Place Value, on a rug made for 12. It's Twister! Help!
My students are fun and engaging.
They are all so different from one another and have different experiences, abilities, and dreams, but together me make a great team. Despite differences, all of my students are willing to help anyone in the classroom. It's a great feeling of ownership. We don't have to be best friends out of school, but while we are here, we need to work together and take care of one another: our classroom family. We live in a city, and they come from a variety of economic backgrounds. Our school is a K- 5 with approximately 4 of each grade, as well as some mixed grade special education classrooms.
My Project
As it is now, we have a small, blue, circular rug for all 21 children to try to sit on during whole group lessons. First graders come in all shapes and sizes. There is simply not enough room for them to all sit comfortably on the rug. Instead it is a battle for personal space and stepped on fingers when we are trying to move about the space. I've tried x-ing out spaces to give them spots, but it is still resembles a Wiggles concert mosh pit. It is difficult for them to be engaged in a lesson when they aren't comfortable. As Kindergarteners they sat on a rug much larger that had different colored blocks to sit in. There wasn't a chance to sit in someones spot because they each had their own spot. The rug that I am requesting has 30 marked out spaces for a child to sit in. It will take all the confusion and feuds over where they sit and just allow them to listen and learn comfortably. The guess work is done for them.
A child's most important job in school is to learn.
If they are going to be successful there are many things that need to be in place for them. One of the most important things is their environment. I have put so much time and effort into creating a safe classroom for them. One that they feel they can be risk takers, historians, readers, authors, and more. This rug albeit a "rug" will make a difference in their being able to learn. They will be comfortable and have their own place to just that.
