it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
This project is one that is very close to my heart as an AP English Language and Dual Credit instructor. My job as an AP Language/DC teacher is to show students how words are powerful enough to inspire and move the world. However, it cannot be denied that the research shows many of our students are not reading. This is due to the sound bytes of information they receive throughout the day and it is impacting them in many ways.
With this project, I intend to expose them to some of the most brilliant writers who have mastered the task of writing an essay that inspires us to rethink how we view our world and ourselves.
The idea is that student will get a sampling of these writers, be challenged to think for themselves, and want to read more.
This is something that I have seen in my classroom through John Green's Anthropocene Reviewed which challenged them to think deeply about ordinary subjects and how they influence us. After that, many continued to pick up the book of essays to read on their own, and some even asked to borrow a copy. This indicates that the interest to learn more and engage in important topics is there, we just have to meet them where they are and give them a little help.
